Role of IAS Officer

The functional Roles of IAS depend on the type of assignment they are allotted. There are three types of assignments given to them which are:

  • Field

  • State Secretariat/Public Sector Undertakings

  • Central Secretariat

IAS Roles and Responsibilities

  • The roles and responsibilities of an IAS vary according to the type of assignment they are assigned with. Usually, an IAS officer is initially allotted a field assignment that is full of complexities. During their field assignment they may have to function on the Subdivisional level or District level based on the nature of the assignment, In the Subdivisional level, they are responsible for the maintenance of law and order whereas, at the District level, they have to perform the same duties as an SDM.

  • IAS allocated with State Secretariat Assignment have to use their expertise and field experience to consult elected representatives to regulate and formulate various government policies and offer advisory to them for making important decisions.

  • IAS also get posted to Public Service Undertakings (PSY) cadre as an important part of higher management of the PSUs such as industrial units, power station, etc

  • When an IAS gets posted to a Central Secretariat Assignment, he/she has to review the government policies, formulate and implementation of these policies etc.

Duties of IAS Officer

The primary duty of an IAS Officer is to maintain the law and order in the region he/she is posted to. They are also responsible for handling various government affairs and formulating and implementing the state or central government policies, They are also responsible for managing the civil staff that works under them. The job of an IAS officer is something many young aspirants desire to have.
